Acura has just taken the wraps off the all-new 3.2CL coupe at the 2000 Greater
Los Angeles Auto Show. The 2001 model year vehicle offers high-performance
engine technology, advanced European styling and a high level of standard
features, making it a player in the hotly contested luxury coupe market.
The CL will be available in two models: the completely redesigned 3.2CL and a
new high-performance version, the 3.2CL Type S. Both models are powered by
versions of Acura's all-aluminum, 3.2-liter, 24-valve V-6 with the patented
VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) system. The standard
3.2CL's V-6 engine produces 225 horsepower, while the new Type S produces 260
horsepower through a dual-stage induction system and low-restriction exhaust
system, making it the most powerful coupe in its class. The Type S tuning also
allows for a flat torque curve, providing an impressive 231 lb-ft of torque
between 2500 and 5500 rpm.
Both CLs are equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission with the Formula
1 race car-inspired Sequential SportShift system, which allows the driver to
select gear changes similar to a clutchless manual transmission. The SportShift
also may be operated as a normal automatic transmission.
While offering substantial performance, both the 3.2CL and the Type S models
will be certified as Low Emission Vehicles, and the California model 3.2CL will
receive Ultra Low Emission Vehicle status.
As is fitting with its higher horsepower engine, the Type S receives sport
suspension tuning for greater cornering capabilities and performance. Large
diameter disc brake rotors provide confident stopping power, and the Type S
features a 17" alloy wheel and tire package.
The new CL is the third Acura to be designed, engineered and assembled in the
United States, and it will be priced between $28,000 and $32,000.
